Beijing – Day 5

Day 5 was a day of relaxation for Leila and I.  We had walked around so much the previous few days, that we needed to rest our weary feet.  For the most part this happened. We went out to the 798 Art District which is Northwest of town.  798 looks to be a an older manufacturing facility that has been turned into an artist enclave.  It is full of galleries, murals, graffiti, sculptures, boutiques, and cafes. All of this intertwined with the remnants of the old factory.  It was a perfect composition of art and urban decay. I was quite impressed with the quality of the art in 798. The sculpture work ranged from the sublime to numerous representations of Mao and the people’s movement.  The crowd was young, hip and very diverse. Some of the gallery spaces, which were in converted warehouse spaces, rivaled the works found the SF MOMA or other reputable modern art galleries.
