Beijing Day 2

Day 2 of our adventures in Beijing involved some serious jet lag. Im not sure how I made it through the first day as well as I did. I got maybe 3 hours of sleep the night before and was a zombie pretty much the entire day. It was also extremely cold outside with gusty winds and near freezing temperatures.  We did make it through some local “hutongs” or alley markets, a few stops at some local pubs and made it to the most bizarre phenomenon (at least to me) in Beijing: the mega karaoke club.

One of the highlights of the hutong was the poultry butcher.  He had 2 drums: one for boiling the bird to losen the feather  and then a tumbler for removing the feathers.  He would then gut the bird and sell it to his customer. It was fairly gruesome, but I bet it was the freshest poultry you could get considering the bird was alive 4 minutes prior.

On another note, the karaoke club was an experience. The process went something like this: 1) rent the room for 4 guest with an 1 hour time limit 2) go to the “supermarket” (located in the Kareoke complex and it is really called the supermarket) to purchase all of the required beverages 3) find your personal Kareoke room in the maze of loud, smoke filled hallways 4) cram as much singing as you possibly can into a one hour time slot. 5) go home. It is all the rage on a Saturday night here. I think I’m a convert now.

It was a pretty exhausting day, but it was a lot of fun!
